If you want to drive out those horrors, you’ll need every man you can get.” He gulped. “I’m with you, and my boys.”

Iuro smiled. “Thank you, Wil. That means a great deal to me.” He looked around at the other nobles. “We will each speak to the men we know, and sound them out. We will have to do so quietly, or else Belamis will hear of it. Speak to people, and ask them if they are willing to fight to rescue our city from this monster. If they are, tell them to prepare. Ready what weapons they can, warn their people to stay alert, and wait for our signal to strike.”

“We can post messages in the square,” Saerian suggested, and a few of the others laughed, but Iuro did not.

“No, you’re right,” he agreed, which made the young noble turn red. “We’ll have to do so carefully, so that Belamis will not suspect, but people do still put up notices there. Yes.” He looked around at his friends and allies again, and raised his voice. “A crimson flame will be our symbol, for we mean to burn out these horrors and restore Ortense to its former glory. Let everyone who agrees to participate know that the messages will be marked with the sign of a flame.”

“What about the warrior?” Pons asked. “Do you think we can get him to join our cause?”

“I hope so,” Iuro replied. “We will most likely need him.” He thought again about the man he had seen. “But we will need to find him first.”

“Hold still!”

“Ow! Damn it!”

“Well, hold still, then!”

Gren tried to sit up and Arianna pushed him back down again, eliciting a grunt and another curse as he slammed into the straw-covered ground. They were in a small stable a short ways outside the city’s far wall, and she was trying to dress the wound in his side.

“Where did you learn to tend wounds, a kennel?” Gren demanded, pushing her hands away.

“Who said I learned?” she shot back, straightening and brushing off her pants. “Fine, do it yourself!” She was almost shouting at him, using anger to conceal her concern. The wound in his side was unlike anything she’d see before. The flesh actually looked as
